Technion Guangdong Institute of Technology, co-established by Israel's Technion and Guangdong's Shantou University (STU), is going to launch the campus construction in Shantou this September. The south campus is expected to be designed as the technology and innovation industrial park, Zheng Renhao, Mayor of Shantou told the press on the 3rd Session of the 12th Guangdong Provincial People's Congress on Feb. 12.
Technion Israel Institute of Technology is Israel's biggest scientific-technological university and one of the largest centers of applied research in the world. The establishment of the Technion Guangdong Institute of Technology is a result of a cooperative agreement signed on September 29, 2013, between the Technion and Shantou University (STU).
Zheng said Technion Guangdong Institute of Technology will be built as a platform to promote the cooperation of Sino-Israel education, culture, and technology. He estimated there will be plenty of high-tech giants setting up new labs and factories around the campus considering the same situation happened in the campus that Technion Israel Institute of Technology built around the world. Shantou will establish a technology and innovation industrial park to satisfy its needs.
Technion Guangdong's vision is to become a world class international technological university campus carrying out cutting-edge research that will encourage entrepreneurship and technology transfer, and foster a high-tech industrial ecosystem in Shantou and Guangdong Province. The agreement is backed by the Guangdong Government, the City of Shantou and the Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF).
