A 19-year-old student surnamed Li who wrote a virus that affected more than 640,000 phone users across the country in August was exempted from prosecution, Luohu District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.

The weekend of Aug. 1 and 2 saw an outbreak of a virus with the file name XXshenqi.apk in many provinces. The software, which targeted Android phones, caused leakage of phone users’ personal information in addition to the accruement of extra text message fees, both in stealth.

Li, a freshman studying software engineering at Central South University in Hunan Province, was detained in an apartment in Bao’an District on Aug. 2.

He came to visit his parents, who were working in Shenzhen, for the summer holiday.

Victims received a message containing the following link — http://cdn.yyupload.com/down/4279193/XXshenqi.apk — which automatically redirected them to download the XXshenqi software. It then accessed users’ contacts and sent the same message to them, thereby propagating.

Li told police that he made the software for fun, but he didn’t expect it to spread so quickly.

According to Li, he accidentally released the virus while testing the program via his friend’s mobile phone. After he lost control of the virus, he contacted telecommunications operators for help.
