Over the years, many heads of states had visited the hotel. On October 18, 1986, Henry Fok Ying-tung presented a gift to Queen Elizabeth II.
The present White Swan Hotel
Over the past 31 years, this 28-story hotel, though not conspicuous as before, is still one of the most recognized five star hotels and a longstanding member of the “Leading Hotels of the World”.
Before the third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee was convened at the end of 1978, Deng Xiaoping gave instructions that several tourist hotels of international standard should be established in the metropolises of China, later recognized as “eight hotels in four large cities”. Thus, Henry Fok Ying-tung (1923 - 2006), the famous billionaire in Hong Kong, received an invitation to invest tourism industry in Guangzhou. Until in April 1979, a document on establishing hotels was signed and the White Swan Hotel project, cooperated by Guangzhou and Fok Ying-tung, finally started.
In 1980s, White Swan Hotel was confronted with the lack of supplies and materials and other difficulties. After experiencing three-year twists and turns in development, this hotel finally came into being. On February 6, 1983, White Swan Hotel officially opened.
