Guangzhou plans to put 700 more taxies into use before this year's Canton Fair Autumn session, and the hearing on this plan will be held on July 27, according to Guangzhou Transportation and Communications Commission.
Guangzhou has about 16,000 taxies at present. The number of taxies has been short for the increasing demands, especially after the motorcycle ban from January this year.聽
According to the plan, 600 new taxi licenses will be distributed to downtown Guangzhou, 50 are for Nansha district, and 50 in Huangpu and Luogang.
Citizens generally welcome the proposal and some also suggest expanding the metro system and add more bus routes. However, some taxi drivers expressed their worries about that their incomes will drop after more taxies hit the road.聽
