Guangdong Univ's new approach for 2008 Olympic Games- China - News Brief

This year, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies started to offer a new major - Arabic Language. The university had planned to enroll only 12 students of less-popular languages but the number of applicants exceeded 1,000.

Guangdong, neighboring Hong Kong and Macao, has frequent trade and culture exchanges with people from all over the world and need people mastering less-popular languages. Moreover, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and the 2011 Shenzhen World University Games to be held in Guangdong, needs lots of youths who can speak foreign languages.

The university also offers Chinese courses for foreign students.
