As part of their first tour in China, BBC Concert Orchestra, together with famous solo cellist Julian Lloyd Webber and opera soprano Valentina Nafornit is to perform at Xinghai Concert Hall, Guangzhou on July 21.

Based in London, the BBC Concert Orchestra is one of the British Broadcasting Corporation's five radio orchestras. It was formed in 1952 from its predecessor the BBC Opera Orchestra. With around fifty players, it is the only one of the five which is not a full-scale symphony orchestra. The BBC Concert Orchestra is the BBC's most populist ensemble, playing a mixture of classical music, light music and popular numbers.

Barry Wordsworth is the conductor laureate of the BBC Concert Orchestra and he will tour with the orchestra to China this time. Barry has made regular appearances with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the BBC Proms since his first televised appearance with them at the festival in 1989. He has toured extensively with the orchestra, including to Japan and the United States for their 50th Anniversary in 2002.

As one of the guest performers, the British solo cellist Julian Lloyd Webber has been described as the "Doyen of British cellists" and widely regarded as one the finest musicians of his generation. His Brit-award winning Elgar Concerto conducted by Yehudi Menuhin was chosen as the finest ever version by BBC Music Magazine and his coupling of Britten's Cello Symphony and Walton's Concerto was described by Gramophone magazine as being "beyond any rival".

Another guest performer, Romanian soprano Valentina Nafornit, best known as the 2011 winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, will show her amazing voice to the accompaniment of the orchestra. At the Guangzhou part of the tour, she will sing operas extracted from Giacomo Puccini's works and Giuseppe Verdi's.
