China: the unexpected destination
Graduation from university usually means a beginning of work and social life. However, things come different in Frank’s story.
“When I finished university, I applied for a volunteer program called ‘WorldTeach,’ which aimed at helping developing countries in the world.
Actually, I applied for American Samoa the first time. But the program was full so they asked me, “would you like to go to China instead?”
It was apparent that China was not the first choice for Frank. After a lot of thought, asking friends and family, he decided to accept the one-year unplanned experience. But five years later, he is still in China.
“It is really hard at the beginning. The volunteer program placed me in Cili, a small town in Hunan. There are not too many western outlets or access to western amenities there. I loved it there, but after a year, I decided to move to Changsha and then Foshan in succeeding years, and finally settling Guangzhou. In Guangzhou, I can find almost everything I need.”
