There are competitions of the powerful sounds of 100 steel drums and a fancy dress competition, which crowns a king and a queen for having the most original and creative of dresses. The float parades are decorated with the yearly theme of the carnival. Around them, hundreds of dancers dance on the streets through the day and the night.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Carnival is the most exciting moment for the Brazilians. Most people in Rio de Janeiro go to Samba schools as a preparation for the festivities. The carnival then is the competition between the numerous Samba schools in the city. Victory or defeat depends on the originality and creativity of the float, music, costumes and dances. Brazilians then dance and parade through the streets until dawn. The show is incredibly colorful and beautiful to watch!
In German, carnival is called "Fasnacht". The second day of the three days carnival is called "Rose Monday" and a big parade moves through the main street. On this day, the citizens of Köln disguise themselves and go out to watch the parade. They jump into the crowd and sing songs together, people randomly kiss each other and children blow soap bubbles. It is like a fantasy world.
