Avoiding skin ulcers through diet
Latest Updated by 2005-01-25 10:24:37

A skin ulcer is a breakdown of the outer layer of skin and fails to heal within a few days. Broadly speaking, it is due to blood flow deficiencies that create an oxygen-staved environment ripe for infection with bacteria.

Since leg ulcers generally result from problems with blood flow in both arteries and veins, the best remedy is one that will aid the circulatory system. People who are susceptible to poor circulation because of a chronic condition will also need to take account of this factor and make necessary adjustments to their diet.

Vitamin C has anti-oxidant properties, so it is worth increasing your consumption of citrus fruits and juices, kiwi, strawberries, blackcurrants and green vegetables such as broccoli, kale and spring greens for example.

Vitamin E has similar benefit and is most abundant in wheat germ, nuts and seeds. Seeds, together with wholegrain and shellfish, are also good sources of zinc, which has beneficial effects for your blood.

All kinds of wholegrain foods, such as rice, bread, pasta and cereals, will boost your overall health. Together with other high-fiber foods such as lentils, beans, chickpeas, fruits and vegetables, they will help counter fatty deposits in arteries, especially as part of a low-fat diet.

If you have high blood pressure, pay particular attention to reducing the amount of salt you consume. People with diabetes need to ensure their blood-glucose levels are well controlled -- whether this is through a change in diet alone or through a change in diet in conjunction with medication in the form of tablets or insulin injections.

Diet tips

Cut down on refined and processed foods and substitute them with whole meal and freshly prepared dishes as much as possible.

If you need to lose weight, opt for juices made from vegetables such as carrots rather than fruit with high sugar content, especially if you suffer from diabetes.

Remember that, although nuts contain useful nutrients, they are relatively high in fat, so do not eat too many if you need to lose weight. Instead, choose unsalted nuts, especially you have high blood pressure.

Caption: Nuts can be very high in fat, but if you stick to unsalted nuts mixed with raisins, you will increase their nutritional benefit.

Caption 2: For leg ulcers, blood flow will be improved if you compress the affected area with a bandage, or wear a supporting stocking.
