Tea, more than just a drink
Latest Updated by 2004-11-09 14:48:27

Warm and soothing, a cup of nice tea is considered China's chicken soup for the soul.

If you look for a moment of peace, or a quiet corner to talk with friends, or appreciate the exquisite tea-making art, Yiche Teahouse is a place that is worth a visit.

Amid high-rise iron and concrete structures, the teahouse is famous for its unusual interior design and good selection of quality Chinese teas and delicate tea wares.

Different from teahouses that are commonly found in the city, Yiche Teahouse is geared toward car enthusiasts.

A huge tire-like trademark board stands at the entrance of the teahouse. Walking into the venue, the stark and modern interior contrasts with the traditional Chinese drink.

The inside is as big as a warehouse and features striped walls. You might find sipping a cup of green tea here is a bit relaxed and carefree. You are not required to dress up in a place like this.

A large variety of tea is on offer. It is a little bit difficult to know how to get started if you are not a tea aficianado.

From West Lake Longjing to Tieguanyin of Fujian Province, from the unique Tibetan tea to the modern fruit tea, it offers a wide range of black, green and oolong teas, herbal and fruit infusions as well as specialty tea-based drinks, hot or iced. Whatever your tastes and preferences, there's a cup of tea to suit everybody.

The tea ceremony is visually attractive. While all the guests have taken their seats, a waitress will perform the art of preparing Chinese tea.

The various cups and saucers look very delicate and interesting. A cup standing on a saucer looks like a boat floating on water. Not surprisingly, the saucer is given the name "tea-boat."

The Chinese tea ceremony emphasizes the tea, rather than the ceremony -- what the tea tastes like, smells like, and how the taste of one tea compares with another.

The teahouse is a very important place for socializing. In fact, the Yiche Teahouse is also home to a local auto club where auto fans meet to talk about cars. Nothing beats a pleasant meeting with new fans, especially when everything about cars is discussed around nice cups of tea.

Zither performances are also an attraction. On weekends, you can experience the charm of this traditional Chinese musical instrument while enjoying tea.

Sometimes, the teahouse invites calligraphers and artists to demonstrate their skills, adding an artistic touch to the place.

An experience at the teahouse is enlightening. The combination of modern tea sets and tea culture blends an appealing chemistry the moment you walk in.

Interestingly, the teahouse also provides beauty and hairdressing services and some sports facilities such as table tennis.
