Try the flavor of a Brazilian barbecue
Latest Updated by 2004-06-22 10:39:36

THE courtyard of the Garden Grill, a Brazilian barbecue restaurant in Shekou, is an ideal place to enjoy the delights of an exotic summer barbecue.

The Garden Grill has been operating in Shekou for three years at the rear of the Taizi Hotel.

With a barbecue grill set in a corner of the courtyard, the restaurant is separated into two, the parlor and the open-air courtyard. Up to 200 diners can be accommodated.

What makes the restaurant special is the barbecue flavor and the way the food is prepared.

Roger Zen, a Brazilian who runs the restaurant, said the special flavor comes from special preparation and seasonings which are popular in Brazil. The meat is pickled for at least 24 hours before grilling.

The seasonings include oregano, salt, garlic, tomato sauce, lemon, shallots, vinegar and other secret ingredients for Brazilian barbecues. The pickled meat includes beef, mutton, pork, chicken, fish and seafood, but beef is the main dish.

"We serve eight kinds of beef. To make our beef varieties tasty with typical Brazilian flavor, we import all our raw beef from Brazil,"said Zen.

He said the restaurant was the only one of its kind in Shenzhen serving picanha, a type of Brazilian beef steak.

Another main beef dish made is the barbecued sirloin wrapped in aluminum foil. After being grilled for five hours, the sirloin has absorbed all the flavors.

All the barbecued meat can be served with a sauce made of green and red capsicum, tomato, onion and vinegar.

The restaurant also has an ambience of Brazilian culture with Brazilian music.

Waiters with long barbecue skewers and huge knifes serve the different kinds of meat.

Customers can choose their favorite meat and the way they like it cooked. Diners may be offered up to 16 varieties of meat items until they are satisfied.

Besides kabobs, fruit can also be grilled and served on skewers here.

"Normally we only serve pineapple and banana, because the pineapple helps your digestion while the banana can balance your taste. It's better to have them after taking too much barbecued meat," said Zen.

The restaurant also serves salads, cold plates, soups, such as borsch, pumpkin or red bean soup, fresh fruit and desserts which include chocolate custard and crème de caramel tempting even ladies on diets.

Drinks include Caipirinha, a popular cocktail in Europe, Cachaca made of sugarcane spirit, and Gualana Chanpagne, an energy drink for children.

Garden Grill serves lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 48 yuan per person, and dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at 88 yuan per person subject to 10 percent service charge.
