Argentine soccer star of 1980s Diego Maradona overcame the medical emergency but his liver is still inflamed due to his alcoholism, his personal doctor Alfredo Cahe said Wednesday.

Maradona, 46, will continue "treatment and a hygienic nutritional diet" at home to cure his acute-toxic hepatitis, Cahe told a press conference held in Buenos Aires' Guemes hospital.

"This time he became more aware of his illness and came out very well. He left before the time I had planned and now he will continue the treatment at home," said Cahe.

The former soccer star will be accompanied 24 hours a day by a team of doctors, nurses and psychiatrists.

Maradona "can make use of all his liberty" and attend if he wishes the classic Argentine soccer Boca Juniors and River Plate game that will be played at Buenos Aires' Bombonera stadium, he added.

On March 28, Maradona suffered a medical emergency due to an "imbalance" caused by his excessive drinking, during his stay in Guemes hospital the doctors kept him sedated to keep him calm.

The local media said Maradona is staying in a ranch close to Ezeiza airport.

Maradona was Argentina's 1986 national soccer team captain when they won the soccer's World Cup in Mexico.

Experts consider Maradona one of soccer's all-time greatest players together with Brazilian striker Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as "Pele."

Cahe added that Maradona will not be interned in a Swiss clinic, "we believe there can be an intermediate two-week phase in which he will follow the treatment at home. I believe the plan is in force and will be accomplished," said Cahe.

Maradona's family had expressed their wish to have the former soccer player at home during his recovery.
