Swiss world number one Roger Federer enjoyed an effortless opening win at the Swiss Indoor Open held in Basel as he dispatched Czech qualifier Tomas Zib 6-1, 6-2 in only 49 minutes on Tuesday (Oct 24th).
Federer has won 10 titles this year, including his last three tournaments, but his previous best chances in Basel were spoiled by Thomas Enqvist in the 2000 final, and Tim Henman a year later. He did not play in Basel the last two years because of injuries.
In Thursday's second round, Federer will face Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, who beat Julian Reister of Germany 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Fifth-seeded David Ferrer, 2004 champ Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic, and Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand also won, but sixth-seeded Andy Murray of Britain, a quarterfinalist last year, pulled out with a throat infection.
