Olympic champ Xing Huina wins two golds at National Games
Latest Updated by 2005-10-24 09:17:14

Olympic champion Xing Huina won double while Liu Xiang's Shanghai quartet took another silver medal to end up the track and field at the 10th National Games.

Xing claimed her second gold here on Saturday after clocking 15 minutes and 20.03 seconds to win the women's 5,000 meters, and LiuXiang touched the finish line of the men's 4x100m relay to stop the clock in 39.65s, following the Guangxi team in 39.41s.

More than 20,000 spectators stood in the chilly wind to cheer for the Olympic champions, as Liu Xiang, who has been treated like a rock star after tying the world record of 12.91 seconds to win China's first Olympic gold in men's athletics last year in Athens, entered the men's 4x100m relay race as a guest actor.

Earlier the day, Yu Chaohong of Yunnan has shattered the Asian record of 3:36:20 holding by compatriot Han Yucheng in the men's 50km race walk, timing in 3:36:06 for the title, while Yu's teammate Zhao Chengliang took the silver medal in 3:36:13 and Inner Mongolia's Alatanga was the bronze medalist in 3:40:23.

The title of the women's 4x400m relay has gone to the Guangdong with a time of 3:30.51, while the defending champion Shandong, spearheaded by women's 400m and 400m hurdles champion Huang Xiaoxiao, was dethroned to the second place in 3:30.63.

Jiangsu won the women's 4x100 meters relay in 44.19 seconds, Guangdong claimed the men's 4x400 meters relay title in 3:06.97, and Sun Wenyong from Shandong took the gold of men's 5,000 meter race at a time of 13:58.02.

In the field, Hebei's Li Yanxi cleared 16.95 meters to claim the title of men's triple jump, beating Lin Mujie Lin Mujie of Fujian to the second place in 16.50 meters and Xinjiang's Li Ming the third in 16.46 meters.

Li Yanxi had been expected to jump over the mark of 17.34 meters, a national record having been held for 24 years by Zou Zhenxian, the legend triple-jumper to world track and field in late 1970s and early 1980s.

The 1.82 meters tall Li, 21, is the only other Chinese jumping over 17m mark beside his provincial teammate Wu Ji after Zou set the national record in the Rome Athletics World Cup in 1981.

At the Eugene Prefontaine Classic Meeting earlier this year in the United States, Li has bettered his personal best to 17.15m after jumping to 17.09 in last year's Olympic trial of China.

"I'm so glad to end up the games with a win. I knew I could make it." said Xing Huina, who won the women's 5,000m final race after her arch-rival in women's long distance race Sun Yingjie tested positive for an agent of testosterone and was suspended for the games on Friday.

Liaoning's Zhu Xiaolin, 21, was beaten to the second place witha time of 15:22.35, while Xi Qiuhong from Beijing the third in 15:25.36.

The title winning time of Xing in the women's 5,000m is far from of the world record of 14:24.68 set by Turkey's 23-year-old Elvan Abeylegesse last year in Bergen.

Xing, who won the Olympic gold of women's 10, 000m last year inAthens with a result of 30:24.36, started Saturday's race of the women's 5,000m right following the leader Chen Xiaofang of ChineseArmy, before trailing to the fourth with five laps to go when Bao Guiying of Gansu taking over the lead.

She did not break away from the main group until sprinting out in the last lap, and touched the finish line with a fifty-meter clear to the second-finisher Zhu.

Xing has entered the National Games for three events, the women's 10,000m, 5,000m, as well as the women's 1,500m.

The Shandong native should have made her gold double on Wednesday when she finished the women's 1,500m first in 4:03.98, but was later stripped of the title after she was confirmed to have fouled against second placed Liu Qing.

Liu's Shanxi team appealed to the Arbitration Panel of the Athletics Competition of the National Games after Liu was beaten on a narrow edge of 0.02 seconds, citing that Xing elbowed Liu in the final straight of the women's 1,500m running.

Xing was then deprived of the result after the arbitration panel reviewed the tape, and Liu was announced the winner.

The women's 5,000 meters has been Xing Huina's another specialty, second to the women's 10,000m, while the women's 1,500m was taken as a special training course by the long-distance specialist for improving her acceleration in sprint of the former two runnings.
