Manchester United put a summer of turmoil behind them to thrash Hungarian champions Debreceni 3-0 inthe first leg of the third round Champions League on Tuesday.
The game marked the first time the Glazer brothers - Joel, Avi and Bryan - had attended a competitive United game since their father Malcom Glazer gained control of the club.
Wayne Rooney put on quite a show for the Americans, punching a shot home on seven minutes to give United the lead.
He then set up second-half goals for Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo, who both finished in style.
Last season Rooney marked his United debut with a hat-trick against Fenerbahce in a Champions League game and he was quick to establish a brisk tempo for the home side in their first Europeangame of the new campaign.
First he threaded a delightful pass through to Van Nistelrooy, who tucked the ball away, only to be ruled offside.
Rooney, Ronaldo and Van Nistelrooy were then involved in swift exchange of passes on the edge of the Debrecen box.
The move broke down, but after the ball richocheted off a succession of Debrecen defenders, Rooney pounced, striking the ball low and hard past Norbert Scernyanszki.
While Rooney's passing and vision continually unlocked the Hungarian side, Ronaldo tormented them with his speed and dazzlingfootwork.
Just before the half-hour those attributes allowed him to breakclear of the Debrecen defence and unleash a fierce shot that Scernyanszki did well to get his body in the way of.
Having dominated so convincingly in the opening stages, United lost some of their momentum and 30 seconds into the second half Peter Halmosi gave the home side a real fright.
Halmosi got the better of Gary Neville and rattled the ball past Edwin van der Sar, only for his goal to be disallowed for a foul on the United defender.
That incident served to pep up United and Rooney slipped the ball through to Van Nistelrooy, who guided a crisp shot into the corner.
Midway through the second half Rooney created United's third goal, picking out Ronaldo, who side-footed past Scernyanszki.
United's third goal prompted manager Sir Alex Ferguson to rejighis formation, introducing Alan Smith and Park Ji-Sung as the South Korean made his competitive debut.
And soon after Scernyanszki cleared a Van Nistelrooy shot with his feet the Dutchman was withdrawn to be replaced by young Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi.
