THE TV version of Red Sorghum, a film by China's most famous movie director Zhang Yimou in 1986, will soon be made, a source from the Xi'an Film Company disclosed.
The film is not only Zhang's landmark work but also helped open a new era for China's movie industry.
According to the source, making the TV series will be a win-win arrangement. The reason is that the film Red Sorghum has had a strong selling point, because a lot of people have seen it since 1986. Seventeen years later, a new generation of audience coming of age need a new version of the classic Red Sorghum.
Secondly, the film capsuled a full-length novel into about two hours, leaving many of the novel's plots out. The TV series, however, will be able to contain more plots and portray characters in a more comprehensive way. This will ensure that the TV series sells well.
The script for the TV series has been finished. Zhang Yimou has been invited to supervise the making of the TV series.
The candidate for the hero has been narrowed to Sun Honglei, who the producers thought has a tough-guy appearance and extraordinary acting flair. The heroine has not yet been selected, but will not be Gong Li who starred in the film of Red Sorghum.
The shooting of the TV series is expected to begin in October.
