Carter, who was acquired from Toronto on December 17 but had not played because of an Achilles injury, scored 23 points in a whopping 42 minutes off the bench but suffered a severe cramp in his left hamstring with 2:13 left in overtime.
After lying on the ground in front of the scorer's table for several minutes, Carter was carried to New Jersey's bench, where he received treatment on his leg. He eventually limped into the locker room with the game still being played.
Richard Hamilton scored five of his season-high 37 points in overtime as the Detroit Pistons posted a 100-90 victory over the Nets, ruining Carter's debut with his new team.
Tayshaun Prince collected 18 points, nine rebounds and a career high seven assists for the defending champions.
Ben Wallace also set a new season high of 18 rebounds, with 17 in the second half. He also had four blocked shots, as did Prince, Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess.
Head coach Larry Brown hailed the performance, saying "This is the first time in my life I've been on a team where four guys had four blocks".
The 16 blocks are the most by the Pistons since 1982.
