Swedish former skiing champion Ingemar Stenmark luckily escaped from a gigantic wave sweeping the beach he had chosen for his Christmas holiday in Thailand.

"We ran for our lives," he told his mother by phone after abandoning the holiday resort of Khok Koli, some 50 kilometres north of Phuket.

Considered the greatest downhill skier of all time, Stenmark won Olympic gold twice and accumulated 86 ski World Cup victories.
