"Superman Returns" flew to the top of the box office in North American theaters this weekend, grossing estimated 84.2 million U.S. dollars since opening Wednesday, according to figures released Sunday.
"The Devil Wears Prada," about a young woman who lands a job in New York City as an assistant to a fashion magazine editor played by Meryl Streep, finished in second place with some 27 million dollars in its opening weekend, said the Los Angeles-based Exhibitor Relations Inc.
Last weekend's leader, the Adam Sandler comedy "Click" fell to third place, taking in estimated 19.4 million dollars over the weekend. The flick has grossed about 77.9 million dollars in its two weeks at the box office, the box office tracking firm reported.
Disney-Pixar's animated "Cars" dropped two spots to fourth place, with an estimated take of 14 million dollars. The movie has grossed about 182 million dollars since opening four weeks ago.
The Jack Black comedy "Nacho Libre" slipped to fifth place, taking in estimated 6.19 million dollars this weekend and totaling about 65 million since it opened three weeks ago.
If estimates hold, the weekend will be the second best Fourth of July weekend for Hollywood, with some 140 million dollars over four days, just behind 2004's three-day tally of 158 million dollars.
