Hong Kong gets Beijing aid
Latest Updated by 2003-05-09 15:21:55

Eight trucks, each carrying about 10 tons of anti-SARS protective gear, left the Huanggang Checkpoint in Shenzhen for Hong Kong at about 10 a.m. Thursday.

This was the first of three shipments of medical aid from the Central Government to support Hong Kong's fight against SARS. The eight trucks were loaded with 113,000 protective gowns and 100,000 shoe shields, which are to be used by front-line medical workers who have been hit hard by the outbreak.

Tang Jiaxuan, a state councilor, said at a ceremony in Shenzhen that the Central Government would continue its full support for Hong Kong and help the city beat the disease.

Tung Chee-hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said such supplies addressed not only Hong Kong's need for material resources, but also boosted local people's spirits, encouraging them to carry on a tenacious struggle against the disease.

According to Tung, after his government placed an order for protective gear with the Central Government, Premier Wen Jiabao said all the equipment that Hong Kong had ordered would be provided with guaranteed quality and quantity and at the expense of the Central Government.

"We have met with an unprecedented disaster, and also an unprecedented fighting will (against SARS) has been provoked from us," Tung said.

He said his government would work with unremitting effort to curb the incidence of SARS in Hong Kong and return life in Hong Kong to normal.

Liao Hui, director of the State Council's Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, Huang Huahua, governor of Guangdong, and Yu Youjun, mayor of Shenzhen, also attended the ceremony.

Tung previously had said Beijing had pledged to provide 400,000protective suits, 200,000 goggles and 1 million face masks.

A shipment of 95,000 protective suits will be loaded on May 10 at Xiaoshan International Airport in the city of Hangzhou for shipment to the special administrative region, according to Xinhua News Agency.
