Asia united against SARS
Latest Updated by 2003-04-29 11:13:48

Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the China-ASEAN leaders' special meeting on SARS in Bangkok Tuesday, where leaders are expected to forge better international efforts to combat the deadly disease.

Tourism, one of the mainstays of the region's economy, has been badly hit by the SARS epidemic. China and the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have pledged cooperation in their efforts to fight the disease.

Health ministers from ASEAN, China, Japan and South Korea on Saturday agreed at a meeting in Malaysia to impose stringent pre-departure screening at airports and seaports.

All participants of the summit would be required to possess a SARS-free medical certificate, Thai newspaper The Nation reported Monday.

Besides the SARS issue, the highlights of the meetings include other issues of common concern, such as anti-terrorism, the postwar situation in Iraq, the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula issues.

The Chinese delegation will attend the senior official's meeting of ASEAN plus three (China, Japan and South Korea) and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Tuesday and Wednesday.

China formally became a dialogue partner of ASEAN in 1992 and has since attended ASEAN annual ministerial meetings.
