Amanogawa
Amanogawa is not a big place, on the ground floor of the CITIC building right next to the NE entrance facing the big waterfall. Half the restaurant is 6 private rooms, but they are expanding, hopefully finished by Christmas. It is one of the best Japanese restaurant in GZ as far as value for money goes. Let’s face it, good Japanese is never cheap, at least here the food and service makes you feel good and not ripped off. Something you should try is their Matsusaka beef, flown in from Japan, it melts in your mouth. Heaps of Shushi and Saki too.

Turtle
As the name implies, here is where to go if you like turtles, cooked ones that is. Also if you want to dine in a very different atmosphere. The interior decoration is a mix between caverm and forest with a lot of strange characters thrown in for good measure. Check out where the dirty dishes go and the bath-rooms, who said the Chinese have no imagination. Xian Zhi soup is their specialty, but don’t order it if you are squeamish, as they perform the entire preparation and cooking process right on your table. There is a large selection of other meats and dishes, very reasonable prices too. Just the place to go to get away from all the normal places.

Soong Foong Inn
 With a bright green sign, it is the only vegetarian restaurant on Ciao Bei Lu. The menu is very extensive, but they do not always have what you want. So be patient, the food is worth it. Unlike other Vegetarian place, the cuisine has a S.E. Asian flavor with lots of spices and chilies. There is Roast duck, Shrimp, Squid, Shark fin soup, even the waitress seem uncertain as they constantly tell you it is really not meat. However, the tastes could fool many and it is much better tasting than just plain tofu.

La Colonial
A newcomer this Shanghaiese/Jiangnanese cuisine restaurant to the GZ scene. Lacated in the Eastern side of CITIC  plaza, go up the escalators on the eastern end to the third floor and you can see it. Great view of Tianhe and great menu. At the moment their special is the Harry Crab special. Apparently there are strict rules, no crushing, slurping of spitting. Anyway, they have plenty of the little nippers and competitive prices with an extensive selection of appetizers, set dinners, baked dishes, clay pots, soups and other delicacies from Shanghai.
