Legend of Sichuan Food in South City
Latest Updated by 2002-04-30 17:11:29

A gangster once hid a bombshell in Chuanguo Yanyi, a popular restaurant in Guangzhou, to extort money. But the bomb exploded in his arms and the restaurant gained a wider reputation throughout the country.

The name "Chuanguo Yanyi" means Legend of Sichuan, the native place of one of the eight major cuisines in China.

In coming to Shanghai, it has become an eatery combining both Sichuan and Cantonese culinary arts.

It is a complex design of European and Oriental style. The decorations and ornaments are more like a Western restaurant, for the designer was a European.

Dried yak meat is a signature cold dish. Tender bamboo shoots with mustard is a refreshing dish, a little spicy but succulent.

Customers are as well served as any star-ranked hotels, and all the dishes have their English-version names.

A new dish of the eatery impressed all of us, one that is named "fo bo piao xiang" (various ingredients stir-fried together surrounded by fried taro paste shaped like the bowl of a monk.)

The taro had a crisp and aromatic crust while the inside was sticky and soft, which should be smashed and mixed with the crab meat, peeled shrimp and celery in the centre. It's a perfect arrangement of meat and vegetarian dishes.

A wide selection of hot or non-peppery dishes are available, such as the savoury sour peeled shrimp and crispy rice.

The average expenditure for two people in Chuanguo Yanyi is 200 yuan ($24).

The Chinese eatery also provides afternoon tea with exquisite Cantonese dim sum.
