GD sees greener environment (Jan, 28)
Guangdong's air quality and water quality have been greatly improved in the past year thanks to the provincial framework of environmental regulation, according to data released by the Guangdong Environmental Protection Bureau.
The average composite air pollution index of Guangdong province in 2001 dropped from the previous year's 2.05 to 1.88 while suspended air particles in the province was reduced by 14.2 per cent.
Water quality in Guangdong's rivers also saw noticeable improvement last year and the province's sewage systems have been upgraded.
Environmental authorities explained that the provincial environmental governance framework has played a vital role in protecting Guangdong's natural environment.
The provincial government drafted and passed several bills for environmental protection last year, and strengthened legal supervision to curb pollution.
