Working upstream to entertain

Despite the fact that the weeklong May Day holidays have been shortened to five days for the sake of SARS, the theme parks around Shenzhen still want to do their best to cash in on the occasion, especially because the government has encouraged people to do local tours and prohibited cross-province tours during the five days.

As safety is first, all the parks have taken measures to keep themselves SARS-free. Splendid China, for instance, has increased the frequency with which it disinfects its restaurants, theaters and sideshow areas. Window of the World, aside from the extra efforts taken to clean its facilities, has put a lot of effort into seeing that its employees' dormitories are disinfected.

As of Friday, all the theme parks in the Overseas Chinese Town started testing the body temperatures of their guests.

Entertainment-wise, Splendid China will theme its holiday event on combining Chinese ethnical sporting events with its regular shows. It is said that the most challenging of the sporting events will be a high wire walk by four Uygur performers. They will walk more than 100 meters above the ground.

To mark the holiday, Window of the World will inaugurate its newly built Rome Holiday Square on May 1, to add to its attractions such as Jurassic Park, Hawaii Volcano Eruption, the Venezuelan Flood and the Indian Hunting Adventure.

In Sea World in eastern Shenzhen, a "Blue Carnival" will debut on the first day of May, which will feature all the marine animals the park has. As the only sea park in the city, Sea World has thousands of various sea animals. And the most interesting of all is a show called Sharks and People Dance Together.

Evergreen Resort, famous for being environmentally friendly, has told the public that most of its attractions are open or semi-open. And it claimed that as it had good ventilation -- which is quite necessary to prevent SARS -- the resort would be the most ideal place to go during the coming holiday.

Happy Valley will hold an extreme sporting event, with participants from about 10 countries. It will also stage an international hip-hop contest, the largest of its kind in China. Eight teams from Canada, South Korea, Japan and China will take part in this contest.

At the Shenzhen Safari Park, all the animals have been given vaccines and medicine to prevent them from getting ill. "We keep the animals well because we want to keep our guests from getting ill," said the spokesperson of the park. The man said that apart from the various mammals it has, the park had just imported many species of birds from around the world.
