Ports handle more cargo

China's major ports handled a total of 10.076 million twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo in the first quarter of this year, up 38.3 percent from a year earlier, the Securities Times reported last week.
The Shenzhen-based newspaper said that domestic ports handled 448 million tons of cargo during the three months of this year, up 20.9 percent from a year earlier.
The newspaper said that the strong growth is mainly due to the country's increased exports and improved capacity at Shanghai and Shenzhen ports.
Cargo handling capacity in Shanghai ports rose 20.9 percent year on year in the three months of this year, while TEU handling capacity increased 38.7 percent.
It added that Shenzhen ports' cargo handling capacity rose 30.2 percent year on year for the first quarter, while TEUs handling capacity was up 48.6 percent.
China's exports in the first three months of this year rose 33.5 percent year on year to US$86.32 billion.
