Wild animal trading halted
Latest Updated by 2003-05-06 15:15:13

The State Forestry Administration and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce issued Monday an emergency notice putting a stop to poaching and selling of wild animals.

Nobody is allowed to sell or buy animal carcasses or live animals, according to the notice. All levels of government have been instructed to deny applications concerned with the selling, buying, importing and exporting of animals.

The notice, which began to take effect the day it was issued, also requires that all zoos raising wild animals be monitored.

Earlier this month, forestry police carried out a tough campaign to deter anyone from illegally killing, selling, buying or trafficking in State-protected wildlife.

During the nationwide Spring Thunder campaign, 838,500 endangered animals were confiscated. About 45,000 of them were wildlife with first-class State protection, said the China Daily.
