South Korean chicken banned
Latest Updated by 2003-12-24 09:24:18

CHINA has banned chicken imports from South Korea to try to block the spread of bird flu.

Importers had been ordered to return shipments of South Korean chickens and related products, the Agriculture Ministry said on its Web site Tuesday. Orders have been issued to seal trucks and planes which carried chicken products.

The order took effect Monday, the ministry said.

South Korean officials say they plan to kill nearly 1 million chickens in a bid to stop the spread of the disease.

The Chinese announcement said the birds were infected with the H5N1 virus. South Korean authorities say they are investigating whether it is the H5N1-97 strain that crossed from chickens to humans in Hong Kong in 1997, killing six people.
