Hotpot diners warned of fish bones
Latest Updated by 2003-12-12 10:35:23

Diners are reminded to be careful when eating hotpot to guard against being choked by fish bones; Wednesday's Shenzhen Evening News quoted a doctor as saying.

The doctor, surnamed Xiao, working with Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital, issued the warning after treating eight patients with fish bones stuck in their throats during a three-hour period Wednesday night.

The eight had been eating hotpot at the time, Xiao said. Six had fish bones removed but two needed further treatment.

Xiao said people should not talk while eating fish and to be careful swallowing fish meat. Drinking vinegar or other drinks in an attempt to flush fish bones down was not at all effective, she said. When fish bones become stuck, diners should try to make themselves vomit to flush fish bones out, or seek immediate medical attention, Xiao said.
