Rare fish rescued from pot
Latest Updated by 2003-11-27 08:25:00

A STINGRAY weighing 150 kilograms was saved from the dinner table by a Shenzhen resident.

Wu Guoxin, who works in a seaside holiday center, said he bought the fish from a restaurant earlier this week.

He said a fisherman had caught the fish in Nan'ao in Longgang District and sold it to the restaurant.

Wu, thinking the fish was very rare, paid more than 1,000 yuan (US$120) for it. He found it was seriously injured and hired eight young men to carry it on a stretcher, continually sprinkling water on it to keep it alive during transport.

The fish is now being treated at the seaside holiday center.

Wu said he would like to donate the fish to Sea World after it had fully recovered.

A "ray" is a type of broad, flattened, cartilaginous fish closely related to sharks. Stingray is just one family of some 340 species of "rays."
