German beer makes a splash
Latest Updated by 2003-09-23 09:04:18

THE German Beer Festival, or Oktoberfest, raised its curtain Saturday in the five-star Shenzhen Landmark Hotel.

Genuine lawn and cobblestone lanes have been laid on top of a part of the floor of the hotel's Piazza Café to give a taste of the venues in Munich, Germany, where the bona fide Oktoberfest is running simultaneously.

Almost the entire German-speaking community in Shenzhen turned out in the hotel on Saturday evening to mark the beginning of the event. The event will continue through Oct. 5.

The opening ceremony featured a big screen on the wall, which was broadcasting live the Oktoberfest in Munich. When he addressed the opening ceremony, Gerhard R. Fasching, Landmark's general manager, announced that the hotel's Oktoberfest started only two and a half hours later than the Munich one.

Landmark's Oktoberfest features different types of German beer from its in-house brewery as well as typical German food such as weisswurst (boiled veal sausage), kassler (smoked pork loin) and schweinsbraten (pork roast).

Oktoberfest was established in October of 1810, when Prince Ludwig of Bavaria had his wedding by inviting 40,000 Bavarians to a celebration in Munich. Now the annual event has gone far beyond the boundaries of Munich and has become a celebration held by many people throughout the world.
