THE national safe drink administrative center has started to assess the safety of drinks in Guangdong.
The center, the only third-party safety assessment organization for drinks in China, had set up an office in Guangdong on Saturday, the Information Times reported.
Independent of government, the center would assess drinks strictly in accordance with international standards.
Its range of business covers all drinks sold in China, including the domestic and foreign brands. If a product passes the assessment, its producer can add a "safe drink" sign into the introduction of the product. Different from the quality safety assessment enforced by the State quality watchdog, the safe drink assessment is not obligatory for producers, and it focuses on the safety of the drink itself rather than that of the production procedures.
