With the effects of SARS waning, the five-star Landmark Hotel (Shenzhen) resumed its poolside barbecue last Friday evening. From now on, the poolside barbecue dinner will be held every Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., said Susan Song, the hotel's public relations manager.

Music is provided by a Philippine band. The cost is only 108 yuan for adults or 88 yuan for children under 12 for a delightful assortment of meats, soups, salads, fruits, desserts and beverages.

To top it all off, you are welcome to jump in the pool and do a few laps.

The poolside area is completely surrounded by concrete high rises. Looking around, you almost feel that you are at the bottom of a well. But the surrounding buildings actually help keep out the hustle and bustle of the city and give you a moment or two of true peace.

And after dinner you have a choice of more entertainment. You can head up to the bar on the 27th floor, which is reminiscent of old Shanghai. You can enjoy popular old songs, famous jazz tunes, cigars and ballroom dancing. If you like it a little bit noisy, make your way down to the 26th floor, which features a karaoke lounge and 16 private karaoke rooms designed in a celestial theme with a sensuous atmosphere.
