GREEN Tea, a movie starring Chinese actress Zhao Wei and actor Jiang Wen, made its first screening Tuesday in Shenzhen.
Director Zhang Yuan says Green Tea is a short but live episode of people's everyday life. But it has rounded up an all-star crew with Christopher Doyle as photography director, Su Cong as music composer and Zhao Wei and Jiang Wen in the leading roles.
With thick eyeglasses and a gray outfit, Zhao Wei plays Wu Fang, a straight-faced but sophisticated master undergraduate. Zhao's look in the film impressed her fans for in their eyes she has always been the mischievous, cynical and good-hearted princess in My Fair Princess, a popular TV soap that raised Zhao to stardom.
A close shot by the camera on a cup of green tea with drifting tea leaves set a relaxing tone for the film. At the same time, the background music lightened up the senses of viewers.
Wu Fang, the female lead, loves green tea and believes that tea leaves could tell a person's fate. Every time she dated a man, she would always order a cup of green tea. It is no exception when she meets Chen Mingliang (starring Jiang Wen).
But Chen thinks it is nonsense and believes he understands women. In his effort to win Wu's favor, Chen meets Lang Lang, a part-time piano player who looks very much like Wu but has a very different character. Thus, Chen starts to prove that the two females are actually the same person.
The film leaves the question whether Lang Lang, the mysterious figure is Wu Fang, the same person with dual-characters, unanswered at the end. Even director Zhang Yuan says it's up to the audience to decide.
