10,000 students settle down at university town
Latest Updated by 2004-09-03 09:42:39

More than 10,000 students have begun academic life at the new Guangzhou University Town in Xiaoguwei, Panyu District.

Guangzhou College of Pharmacy held an opening ceremony at its university town campus Wednesday (Sep. 1st) for 3,000 freshmen, while 1,300 students checked in at the new campus of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA), the Guangzhou Daily reported. Students of higher grades of the GAFA will move to the town next year.

Students from another eight colleges and universities will also enroll at the university town, with Guangzhou University to be the last next Thursday (Sep. 9th).

Police promised an early response to calls from the university town. Fifteen new police cars have been deployed to cover the town which will also be supervised by 250 policemen including 50 armed policemen. Another 15 cars are to be deployed soon.

Also on Thursday, a service facility center and an out-patient hospital opened in the town and an integrated energy center, reportedly the largest in China, had started operating, the Yangcheng Evening News said. The center provides electricity, heating and air conditioning, saving at least 20 percent in energy compared with other providers, the newspaper said.

Xiaoguwei is a region where the natural environment and ancient relics are well preserved. As well as a mausoleum of an ancient kingdom, there are tomb groups dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
