It is a traditional local sports activity in the region of Guangzhou and a grand entertainment on Dragon Boat Festival in the rivers and lakes in the Pearl River Delta. It enjoys a history of at least 1,000 years. The race is usually held on the Pearl River from Ershatou to Haijiao Red Mansion Swimming Pool.

On Dragon Boat Festival every year, a race is held with hundreds of dragon boats and hundreds and thousands of spectators. Since 1953, the race has been organized by official agencies. It was called off during the Cultural Revolution before its renewal in 1979.

Since 1985, four dragon boat races by international gauges have been held, and the race in 1988 was instilled with novelty through the combination of sports, trade, culture, entertainment and tourism for the first time.

The races every year since 1995 on the downtown section of the Pearl River have enjoyed the unprecedented pomp. Now dragon boat races have become an important activity in Guangzhou's athletic contacts with foreign countries or regions and become increasingly internationalized.
