A news photograph taken by an Iraqi photographer was judged Photo of the Year at the China International Press Photo Contest (CHIPP) on Thursday.Titled Wounded Iraqi Boys by Iraqi photographer Fares Al-Dlimi, the photograph captured the gold prize for Spot News, the top award in the contest.
Other gold winners included Serbian photographer Goran Tomasevic's Wall in the daily life category and Chinese photographer Qiu Yan's Twin Brothers Practicing Diving in the sports category.
Two Shenzhen photographers also took home prizes.
Yu Haibo from the Shenzhen Economic Daily took the gold prize for Arts and Entertainment News with his The Impulse to Music of Shenzhen's Youth, depicting a concert featuring local bands. Another winner was Zheng Dongsheng from the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily for his Last Oyster Villager.
"The contest marks a good start of an international professional event with many excellent entries and jury members from around the world," said Xu Zugen, executive director of the Photojournalist Society of China and director of the CHIPP jury committee. However, Xu also pointed out the weakness of Chinese photographers such as less exciting visual presentations and lack of concern for international breaking news.
