A Shenzhen man whose young son was killed in a traffic accident this month has started a charity fund using the 300,000-yuan (US$38,560) compensation he received, Thursday's Southern Metropolis Daily said.
The truck driver behind the hit-and-run incident also turned himself in Tuesday and admitted to running over 7-year-old Ma Jialiang, the newspaper said. Mo Zhiping, the driver, was detained Wednesday.
On Jan 10. Ma Jialiang was on the backseat of a motorcycle taking him home from school on Sanwei Road Central in Sanwei Village, Bao'an District, when Mo's truck collided with the two-wheeler. Mo didn't stop the truck and ran over Ma on the ground. Ma died on the spot and Mo fled immediately.
The motorcyclist, an employee of the factory owned by Ma Jialiang's father, Ma Yingdong, said he tried to follow the truck but failed. "I couldn't believe what I saw when the truck just run over the boy's body, very brutal. It was just like an intentional murder," he said.
While police investigated the case, Ma Yingdong and some family members found a truck bearing the license plate number provided by the motorcyclist. They held the truck owner Lai Lijiang hostage on hold and forced him to find Mo.
Lai sent his brother to find Mo and persuaded him to turn himself in.
Lai also agreed to pay 300,000 yuan in compensation for Ma Jialiang's death.
Ma Yingdong decided to establish the fund in cooperation with the newspaper. He said he plans to name the fund "Jialiang-Southern Metropolis Daily Fund."
Ma Yingdong said he hadn't decided who the fund will benefit yet, but "I really hope that the foundation will carry on with new donations to help more people."
"This is the best I can think of doing for my deceased son. He is such a wonderful boy," Ma Yingdong said.
