According to the newly released Guangdong Population Development Strategy Research Report, some 4.6 million male in Guangdong might find it difficult to look for a marriage partner due to gender imbalance prevalent in the province.
In a local population forum held on Monday, experts taking part in the forum released their research results on population issues in Guangdong.
Influenced by the traditional idea of the male dominance, the problem of gender imbalance became serious in Guangdong since 1980s. Statistics showed that among the people born between 1985 and 2000, the number of male was 1.7 million more than female born during the same period.
Reports show that Guangdong has become one of the few regions in China with the most serious problem of gender imbalance. Such problem was even worse in the western part of the province. If the problem does not bring under control, experts predict that another 2.91 million more male will be born to female between 2000 and 2020. This means that a total of 4.6 million "surplus" male will be born from 1985-2020, compared with the number of female born during the same period.
