LANA WILLIAMS is a yoga teacher at Hotz Yoga. The apparently delicate girl is capable of very difficult postures, such as bringing her leg up to her shoulders and holding it there for several minutes.
The 22-year-old Chicago girl came to Shenzhen three months ago and started teaching yoga this month. She does not speak Chinese, but she communicates with her Chinese students very well, through gestures and encouraging smiles.
Despite her six years' experience in practicing yoga, Williams is not a yoga teacher by profession. Her full-time occupation is fashion design, and she designs casual wear for a Shenzhen-based luxury women's brand. She said the clothes designed by her would appear at the MIXc shopping mall next winter.
Williams got the job after seeing the recruitment information on the Web site of her school, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. "The vacancy offered very competitive salary and good work environment," said Williams, adding that her current salary at the fashion company was even higher than what she could expect from an American or British employer.
After deciding to come to Shenzhen, Williams searched for a hot yoga gym in Shenzhen, and soon she found one. Her original plan was to be a student, but she ended up being a teacher, after the manager of Hotz Yoga found her postures "very standard."
Williams said she was very happy in China because of the food, travel options and job opportunities. "China is a cool country," she concluded.
