The Boluo Temple Fair is held to celebrate the birth of Boluo, the Goddess of the South China Sea.

Boluo, a Goddess to Bring Blessings to Families

The traditional Cantonese belief is that the Sea Goddess can help in relationship matters. An old Cantonese saying goes, "A visit to Boluo this year, a woman to marry next year". Near the temple, hundreds of people spent the day under red bean trees after briefly praying for a good (or a better) relationship.

Modern Twist to Ancient Practices

According to tradition, a procession took the statue of Boluo out of the temple and down to the water. Locals shaded her with large palm-leaves and Boluo Chickens figurines followed the statue to the shore where all the attendants asked her for favorable weather; timely winds and rain for crops, no big waves to guarantee prosperity and peace. But this year, focus was put on explaining the traditions with large cartoon strips explaining the history of the festival and even film animations available online at www.boluoji.com
