The first British film week on the Chinese mainland, which began last weekend in Shenzhen, has attracted a large number of Chinese and expatriates.
Shenzhen Auditorium, which is the city's only venue for the event, revealed that tickets had been selling well. The films have attracted a lot of young people who are interested in learning about British culture. Some parents have even booked tickets for their children.
"It's a rare chance to watch British movies. As my son will go to study in London next year, I think watching these movies might give him a basic idea about the life and people there," said Rong Jun, father of a 16-year-old who is studying at Shenzhen Middle School.
The sponsor of the film event, the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate General in Guangzhou, was happy at the success of the event, which has already toured Chongqing and Guangzhou.
Christine Skinner, an official with the Cultural and Education Section, said: "We will organize another British film week in Shenzhen next year to promote British culture in the city."
Skinner also said that Shenzhen was an ideal place to promote overseas culture, as people here are young and open. "There are many young people here who have experience of studying in Britain."
"We are not just interested in making this a financial success, we want to introduce more British movies to the local population," Skinner added. She also revealed that more cultural activities like concerts would be introduced to Shenzhen in the future.
