A win-win situation would be the best choice for Chinese cultural development against a backdrop of globalization, Long Yongtu, secretary-general of Bo'ao Forum in Asia, told a forum on global cultural industry development Friday.
"The basic characteristics of modern culture stress competition based on fairness, rationality and complementation. Multi-polarity in politics also helps form multi-polarity in culture. So mutual respect and tolerance will be the backbone of the development," Long said.
Part of the cultural industry fair, the forum featured 10 speakers including Robert Mundell, the 1999 Nobel laureate in economics, Milugros Del Corral, deputy chief of UNESCO and Yan Xiaopei, vice mayor of Shenzhen.
Wu Jianmin, president of the China Foreign Affairs Univeristy in Beijing, said Shenzhen had a short history but its innovation was based on the time-honored Chinese culture.
He cited three advantages for Shenzhen in cultural development: a new city with very little ideological burden; an immigrant city with a pool of different ideas; proximity to Hong Kong with easier exchange with the outside world.
Daniel Wong, the first Chinese mayor in the United States, said both the U.S. and Shenzhen were built by immigrants, and so the two had something in common with peaceful coexistence and mutual respect for different cultures.
Mundell praised Shenzhen for its beauty and pool of talent from throughout the country. He said Shenzhen had a good foundation for cultural industry development and prospects were rosy in this regard.
