At least 200 people failed to register marriages in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, on Tuesday, during the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival, reports the Guangzhou Daily.
Due to arriving at the city's marriage registration offices late, the quotas for marriage for the day had all been used, the paper said.
To successfully register for marriage certificates, some would-be brides and bridegrooms arrived at local marriage registration offices as early as 5 am on Tuesday, four hours before they opened.
A total of 800 couples registered to marry on Tuesday, up eight times compared to an ordinary day.
Many local residents thought the traditional Chinese festival of family reunion could compete with Valentine's Day as the luckiest day to get married.
