Zheng Xiaoling, a junior high school student from Huanggang Middle School, won a silver medal and the prestigious Mao Yisheng Technology Award at the 19th National Junior Scientific and Technological Innovation Contest, which ended August 24 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.
Her entry in the contest was a sex education survey among Shenzhen teenagers, which was carried out under the guidance of her teacher Xie Jinfeng more than a year ago and covered around 750 middle school students in Shenzhen.
The survey attracted a lot of attention and praise from contest participants and organizers as well as the media. It was the only subject of its kind among the 343 entries nationwide.
Zheng won the award not only for her innovative topic and rigorous survey, but also for her high-quality performance in three exams, which evaluated the participants' general knowledge, practical capabilities and communication skills.
The Mao Yisheng Technology Award is granted once every two years to those who conduct innovative and fruitful research in their field. Zheng Xiaoling is the only winner of the award this year from Guangdong Province.
The two awards are the lastest to Zheng's long honor list, which included first prize at the Guangdong Junior Scientific and Technological Innovation Contest and two awards at the Third APEC Youth Science Festival.
