American couple Carol and Mike Neeland, both teachers at Shekou International School (SIS), started work with the school about a month ago.
Both veteran teachers, they met and married when they worked at an international school in Barcelona, Spain. "Barcelona will always be special," Carol said. They had returned to that city four times since they left.
The couple also taught in an American school in Taipei for five years. Comparing Shenzhen with Taipei, they said Shenzhen was much greener, quieter and with less traffic. Nevertheless, the couple has hardly gone beyond Shekou and has yet to see other parts of Shenzhen.
They also said they had wanted to work in a smaller school, pointing out that the Taipei school was much bigger than SIS with more than 2,000 students. They said they liked the small expatriate community in Shekou which felt like a family.
"Here we know everyone," said Carol. They have two children, one 18 months old and the other 4 years old. They want to work in Shenzhen for five years, the maximum time a teacher is allowed to teach at SIS.
