Shenzhen has the best quality teachers compared with other cities throughout the country, Lai Qunyang, an official of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, said Tuesday (Aug 17).
By the end of 2003, the city had 61,000 teachers. While more than 600 have received commendations from the national and provincial governments for their work, six are fellows of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering, both China's top agencies for scientific research, and 10 receive special allowances from the State Council.
Shenzhen also has China's youngest teachers. More than 85 percent of the teachers are under the age of 45 and 57.1 percent of Shenzhen's higher education institution teachers have master's or higher degrees, while more than 90 percent of middle school teachers are university graduates.
"For primary schools, more than 90 percent of the teachers have graduated from junior colleges or higher level schools," he said.
