"Baiyun Mount is Guangzhou's Green Lung." This is a household saying in Guangzhou. More and more citizens choose to get close to the greens and the mountains in weekends.

To protect these greenbelts for the city, Guangzhou urban planning bureau announced on July 25 to ban construction in at least 70 percent of the 7,000 square kilometer green area of the city.

According to Guangzhou Government official website, protected areas include the Baiyun Mountain, the Maofeng Mountain, as well as greenbelts, rivers, historic residential areas and buildings. By 2010, a network of greenbelts will cover Guangzhou City and 50 forest parks will be built. The greenbelt management and maintenance programs of Guangzhou are to be strengthened.
