SOME 30 disabled citizens toured Shenzhen accompanied by 30 local families in an event organized by the city's volunteers' association, disabled people's association and Shenzhen Press Group on Saturday (Jan 27).
Qiu Mei, vice director of the Standing Committee of the Municipal People's Congress, and other senior officials attended the morning launch ceremony at Shenzhen Book City Plaza.
Members went in four teams to the top of Diwang Mansion to enjoy an aerial view of Shenzhen, Dameisha Beach in the east of the city, Sea World in Shekou and Window of the World.
Many parents brought their children on the trip to teach them about caring for others. Xiao Jie, a second-grader with Hongling Primary School, gave a painting to a 5-year-old disabled girl as a gift. "We are good friends now. I hope you like my painting," Xiao told the girl.
"It's a good opportunity to teach my child about love," said Mo Peimao who brought his son from Longgang District to participate in the event.
Shenzhen Sun Hospital also sent several doctors and nurses to accompany the disabled on the trip in case they needed medical care. The hospital has also promised to offer free surgery to five impoverished patients with cataracts.
In a separate event, 20 citizens visited street cleaners and traffic police at their posts, bringing them gifts and cards.
