HUNDREDS of turtles were found on a beach and in the sea near Mawan port, Shenzhen over the weekend, the Daily Sunshine reported.

A dozen people working nearby told the newspaper that they had taken home at least 50 turtles out of curiosity, but later decided to throw them back into the sea.

"I take back a turtle weighing about 15 kilograms but it refused to eat anything I offered," said Chen Yihui, one of the workers.

"After discussion with my fellowmen, we think it might be the best way for them to return to the nature," Chen said.

In coastal areas, it is a custom for people to set turtles free for good luck, and this could be the reason why these turtles suddenly appeared, said Gu Hexiang, who is in charge of the turtle nature reserve in Huidong port.

Gu urged residents not to set turtles free directly as the turtles may not be able to adapt to the natural environment.

Gu said that residents should look out for the green turtle, an endangered species in China, with a population of less than 2,000 at present. It is listed under State protection. Gu said people should call his agency if they found any green turtles.

He said residents who find turtles should send them to the Huidong turtle nature reserve.
